Welcome to Uni: The Ultimate SU Lingo Guide!

So, you’re finally here at university! Between figuring out how to cook something other than pasta and remembering where your next lecture is, you might be hearing all sorts of strange words and wondering, “What on earth is The SU?” Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered! Here’s your guide for all things SU, so you can hit the ground running.

What Even is The SU?

The SU (short for Falmouth & Exeter Students’ Union) is your go-to place for everything student-related. We’re not part of the universities or FX Plus; we’re an independent, student-led organisation that’s all about making your uni life the best it can be. And the best part? We’re not-for-profit, so every penny we make goes right back into making your time here better.

Who Are the Presidents?

Our Presidents (you might hear them being called Officers or Sabbs) are students just like you who either took a year out or have just graduated. They’ve been elected to represent your interests and make sure your voice is heard across the universities. They’re here to represent you, so if you want to see what they’re up to or need to chat, you can follow them on social media  or drop them an email at presidents@thesu.org.uk

Academic Reps

If you’ve got issues with your course (like why there’s so much reading or why haven’t you had your marks back yet), your Academic Reps are here to help. These are students who represent you in meetings with uni staff. Whether it’s Course Reps or Department Reps at Falmouth, or Course Reps, EDI Reps, and Subject Chairs at Exeter (Cornwall), they’re here to make sure you get the most out of your academic experience.

You can find out more about what reps do & how you can find yours here (https://www.thesu.org.uk/voice/representation/reps/)

What’s a Student Forum?

This is the new way of doing student democracy where any student can attend and vote on the matters discussed. Whether you want to debate, vote on important stuff, or just see what’s going on, Student Forum is perfect for you. Plus, you get to hold the Presidents accountable for the work they’re doing on your behalf. Interested in attending Forum? Click here to check out more information and the dates of the next meeting! (https://www.thesu.org.uk/voice/representation/democracy/forum/)

Make a Change (Without Breaking a Sweat)

Got an idea to make uni life better? Maybe you’re dreaming of more bins on campus or banning 9 AM lectures on a Monday (we feel you). With the Make a Change tool, you can submit your ideas online and see what everyone else thinks. The most popular ideas get discussed at the next Student Forum, and if yours gets the thumbs-up, we’ll work to make it happen.  You can check out some previous Make a Change proposals and submit your ideas here (https://www.thesu.org.uk/voice/representation/democracy/make-a-change/)

Collectives: Find Your People

University can feel huge, but that’s where Collectives come in. These are groups where you can meet like-minded people and get involved in making a difference. Whether you’re an international student, part of the LGBTQ+ community, or an online student, there’s a Collective for you. It’s a great way to find like-minded people and work together to create change. Find out more here (https://www.thesu.org.uk/voice/representation/democracy/collectives/)

Elections: Get Involved, Make a Difference

When we talk about elections, we’re not talking about the ones on TV. At The SU, elections are your chance to choose who represents you—whether it’s the Presidents or Co-Chairs. You can run for a position or just cast your vote for the candidate who gets you. Either way, it’s your chance to make your voice heard.

Campaigns: Change the World (Or at Least Your Uni)

Ever wanted to start a movement? Whether it’s something big like wheelchair accessibility or something close to your heart like gender expression, campaigns are your chance to make a difference. And the best part? You can do it your way, whether that’s organising a sit-in, launching a petition, or getting creative with some banner drops.

You can find out more about our campaigns here (https://www.thesu.org.uk/voice/campaigns/)

Student Groups

Uni life isn’t just about studying (thank goodness!). Student Groups are where the fun happens—whether you’re into sports, like Rugby or something quirky like Swift Soc. There are over 100 groups to join, so you’re bound to find something you love. And if you don’t, why not start your own? The possibilities are endless!

Check out all the information you need to join a group or start your own here (https://www.thesu.org.uk/activities/groups/)

We know there’s a lot to take in, but don’t stress. We’re here for you every step of the way. So, swing by The SU, grab a coffee, study, chill out, or just have a chat with us about anything on your mind. And don’t forget to follow us on Instagram to keep up with all the stuff we’ve got planned for you!

Welcome to uni—we can’t wait to see what you’ll do!
