Staying in Cornwall during winter break?

We know that not everyone is heading home for the holidays, and if you’re staying in Cornwall over the winter break, it can feel a little quiet. But don’t worry – here’s a list of ways to stay relaxed, recharge, and look after your wellbeing during this time. Whether you’re an international student, someone with your own personal reasons, or someone who simple loves Cornwall in winter, there’s something here for you!

  • Take a Winter Stroll Along the Cornish Coast

Cornwall’s coastline is stunning all year round, but there’s something especially peaceful about it during the winter. Take a stroll along one of the many beautiful beaches or coastal paths, but make sure you wrap up! The crisp winter air, breeze and the sound of waves can help clear your mind and blow the cobwebs away.

Bored of beaches at Falmouth? Read our Bus and Train journey guide for December in Cornwall if you’re up for an adventure to discover somewhere new!

  • Visit a Museum or Gallery

Aside from beautiful coasts, Cornwall also has a fantastic range of museums and galleries to visit. Take a trip to the Tate St Ives to admire contemporary art or pop into the Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro to get a feel for Cornwall’s history and culture. It’s a nice way to take yourself out on a solo date in a relaxed, low-stress environment.

  • Explore Local Cafés and Restaurants

While Cornwall is quieter in the winter, there are still plenty of cosy cafés and restaurants to visit. Why not treat yourself to a hot drink at one of your favourite spots? Whether it's a proper Cornish cream tea or a warming hot chocolate, spending some time out and about can do wonders for your mood.

Ah, we know what you’re thinking – but what if I don’t want to go out?

To all our homebodies – we see you! Here's your ultimate cosy survival guide:

  • Cosy up with a book, audiobook or podcast

Winter is the perfect time to dive into a good book while you relax indoors. If you’re not wanting to spend on an expensive new book, charity shops are a great place to grab some reads for a good price. Not wanting to spend at all? That’s understandable - pop into the library at Penryn or Falmouth campus. Alternatively, you can sign up for a membership at any Cornwall library such as the Penryn and Falmouth Town library, completely for free! They’ve got a great selection of fiction and non-fiction books, plus you can also download the app Borrowbox once you pick up your library card, where you can browse their vast selection of eBooks and audiobooks, also for free! Our top picks for some cosy winter reads are..

  • Before The Coffee Gets Cold

  • The Bear and the Nightingale

  • The Shining (One for those horror lovers out there!)

If reading’s not your thing, a podcast is a great alternative – whether you’re into true crime, general discussions, or something to make you laugh, there’s something for everyone. Our top picks are..

  • Help I Sexted My Boss

  • Off Menu

  • The Rest is History

Pick up a new creative hobby!

Not interested in reading anything but feeling creative? Why not try journalling or crafting? Take some time to reflect on the year with a journal – write down your thoughts, goals, or things you’re grateful for. Or if you’re feeling crafty, start a DIY project! Try knitting a scarf or creating some winter-inspired art, it’s a relaxing way to spend the time, and you’ll feel a sense of achievement when you finish something.

Try yoga, meditating or working out at home!

Staying active doesn’t always have to mean going to the gym. Yoga can be a super helpful way of clearing your mind. You can also workout at home. There are loads of online classes and apps for all, no matter your experience level. If you don’t have a yoga mat or space, there are plenty of workout videos you can browse that are specifically for smaller spaces! Our top picks for home workout/yoga videos are..

MadFit’s 30 Min Full Body Workout – Small Space Friendly (No Equipment, No Jumping)

Stay Connected

We know that it can feel isolating when you’re away from home, so remember that you’re not alone. Reach out to friends or family, whether it’s through a call or a text. It’s important to stay connected, especially over the winter break when things might feel quieter. You can also join us at The SU for a cosy and festive afternoon, where we’ll have games, music, snacks, and of course hot chocolate! Alternatively, if you’re looking to meet new people, The SU has a Whatsapp group for students who are staying in Cornwall over the break looking to connect with each other.

Regardless of your circumstances, it’s important that you take care of yourself this winter break. We’ve got your back with some wellbeing focused activities.
