October Update from Marketa

I've been organising events and activities to feed students, present different ways of living, and preparing for the Big Rep Meeting.

Food bags

In the first week of October, I managed to secure support and funding from Reslife, and delivered 248 bags of food, one for every flat in Glasney and Packsaddle halls. I collaborated with Jake Causley, Sustainability Coordinator at Falmouth University, who shared recipe cards for a Dahl designed by a student that attended the ecological citizenship course.

The aim of this project was to encourage student community through the cooking and sharing of food, whilst supporting the Falmouth Food Co-op – a grassroots charity that sells organic produce from as locally sourced farms possible. This project has not only been beneficial for student health and community, but also for the health of the soil that we rely on to feed us for many generations to come.

If you cooked your flat meal and have any photos, please send them to us! presidents@thesu.org.uk

Trip to Trevone

Last week I organised for a group of 15 students to visit Trevone quarry. Throughout the tour of the 20-acre site, we learned about small scale eco developments, rewilding, and the policies related to living on land and how to set up an eco-village community. Rob (the land-owner) guided us through the village and patches of ancient temperate woodland, undisturbed due to the uneven topography caused by the mining of granite, so farmers could not deforest the area.

The aim of this trip was to inspire people to know that alternative ways of living close to nature are possible without having to climb the extortionate prices of the housing market.

Instigating topics of conversation for the big rep meeting

In preparation for the big rep meeting which is a key feedback meeting with all course reps for Falmouth University and the University of Exeter in Cornwall, I have proposed reps talk about their feelings on not having ruminant meet (i.e. beef and lamb) being sold in uni catering sectors since its carbon footprint is double that of chicken and pork. Lorna Sullivan, Head of Operations (Events, Conferences and Summer Accommodation) at FX Plus, and Oliver Lane, Director of Campus Services at FX Plus, have been invited to this meeting.

My top priority for the big rep meeting is for students to discuss the concept of ‘future facing education’ – e.g. we could ask ‘in relation to the climate end ecological crisis, how could your course better prepare you for the world of tomorrow and beyond rather than the world of yesterday?’

Martin Seigert will be invited to this meeting and an equivalent member of staff for Falmouth university.
