October Update from Fina

Find out what I've been doing to work towards my manifesto priority of equality and diversity, wellbeing, and sexual health.

Equality, diversity, and inclusion with a focus on international, disabled, and LGBTQIA+ students

Intercultural cafe

Due to my presence in various meeting concerning the international student experience, we have successfully moved intercultural café so that it takes place in cosy SU spaces rather than the cold environment of a seminar room.

This allows student who attend to feel more relaxed and hopefully enjoy their experience more.

NUS lobby day

At the end of October Connie and I will be going to parliament to lobby our MPs to agree to the amendment to the renters rights bill that would abolish guarantors for student renters

This would alleviate a lot of pressure on international students, who in leu of a UK based guarantors are sometimes forced to pay 6-12 months rent up front, creating great financial strain.

Wellbeing

Accessibility pop-ups

I have conducted a pop-up on Penryn and Woodlane campuses in conjunction with the accessibility team. These have been a method for receiving student input on struggles with accessibility while at university, while helping students understand and access ILPs and DSA.

I will be writing a report on the data I collected from this in conjunction with the reports I have received from FXPLUS on what improvements they have made following the Rolling Forward campaign. I will then talk through this report with senior staff at the universities to continue pushing for further accessibility improvements.

Exeter University mental health charter

Co-leading with the Exeter Guild president on the student submission

Evaluating the universities wellbeing services and their general support for students

Will be gathering student input over the next month to write the report that contributes to the universities application in January

Sexual health

Shag week

I have begun to plan Sexual Health and Guidance week which will take place in February.

This will be a week full of workshops and events encompassing body positivity, queer sex, safe sex, drag queens, and much more!

I am currently just in the planning stage and am eager for more student input as to what student would like to see from this.
