Hi, my name is Gemma and I am one of the subject chairs for the BMBS programme this year alongside Saskia.
I am going into my 5th year and have lived in Cornwall since moving here for work in 2015. I am a non-traditional student having graduated from my first degree in 2009 and starting medicine in my 30s (I know - I'm really old!).
I chose to become a rep because I wanted to represent and provide a voice for students.
Following feedback last year the reps highlighted amongst other things the cost associated with SSUs, in particular the year 4 Medical Humanities SSU and unfair negative professional judgements.
As well as representing the wider student body, I am particularly passionate about advocating for students studying from both widening participation and non-traditional backgrounds such as mature students, those studying as a second degree and those with caring responsibilities.
The best thing about studying in Cornwall is the beautiful location. You are never far from an interesting place to visit and wind down after a hard week on placement. I can't narrow down one favourite, but I think the beaches, coastal footpaths and exploring the old tin mines are some of my favourite outdoors things to do.
In addition, if you haven't already you must visit the Eden Project. They do an annual locals pass or usually offer free entry on some weekends during the Winter for NHS staff. My favourite time of year to visit is in December when they have a light show on in the biomes, ice skating and music. For those who are new to Cornwall, trust me you will love it. It is one of the friendliest places you can live and (almost) everyone you meet on placement wants you to teach and support you.
If I could offer one tip to fellow students, it would be to enjoy your time here. Before you know it you will be a 5th year and applying for your foundation job as a doctor. While it is important to work hard make sure you also plan time for relaxing and enjoying your time as a student.
If you're interested in signing up as rep, sign ups are open now until 11 October 2024.
