Marketa shares the wonderful things she's been working on over the last couple of months.
Climate and Nature (CAN) Bill
Connie and I wrote a letter that was sent out directly to Cornish MPs, asking them to pledge to attend Westminster on the 24th January to vote for the CAN Bill.
We also wrote a version that was sent out to staff and department heads so students could sign and send a letter to their MPs themselves. The CAN bill is important as it has some serious legislative measures that will help fight against the climate and biodiversity crisis in the UK.
CEC board
I discussed Exeter’s new carbon strategy and how there will be more efforts to incorporate the local community. This is a space where I continuously lobby the university to ensure it is making the best possible decisions on how carbon is managed, and what considerations are being made for nature and biodiversity impacts on both Cornwall and Devon campuses.
Ecosia
Chloe (the proposer and lead for the Ecosia campaign) and I have attended a meeting with FXplus and the University to try make some headway with the campaign. In addition, the executive committee approved for Chloe to access £200 for further campaigning. I have also reached out to the Exeter guild to ensure there is an Ecosia team on Streatham campus since the majority of Exeter students are in Devon.
PBU
Plant based unis campaign has set up a working group, the purpose of which is for students to champion a just, fair, and affordable plant-based transition across the catering outlets on campus. This will be a place for opinions and lived experiences to be shared on climate injustice and biodiversity loss and use the power of a student led movement to make change.
Disabled students commitment
I have helped the EDI team set up a Penryn campus disabled students working group that will feed into the Disabled Students Commitment for Exeter.
Changing Koofi suppliers from Starbucks
Posters to support removing Starbucks as a supplier on our campuses are finally going to be printed. Student feedback will be collected commencing display of posters in Koofi.
Neurodiverse provisions in library
In response to the Make a Change submitted last term proposing for more single room study spaces, I enquired what possible changes could be made, and what neurodiverse provisions there already are in the Penryn campus library. Since there are plans for the library to be refurbished soon, there is scope to fulfil this Make a Change submission. Off the back of the library team meeting, a few students and I have been invited to give feedback on the library refurbishment on Falmouth campus to see if any aspects/improvements can be transferred to Penryn.
More veggie food on campus
The catering team and I have agreed to trial meat free Mondays starting from the beginning of the spring term in March. This will be an opportunity to gather student feedback and gather sales data. Fingers crossed the initiative will be able to continue.
