Bridge to Wellbeing (A Student Campaign)
Hi! My name is Leah Shrimpton, and I am a 3rd Year BSc (Hons) Business Management student at Falmouth University. Whilst I am at University, I work in the Penryn Campus Stannary Bar as well as a Student Ambassador and I am also a Student Rep for my course. One thing I constantly see among lots of students is a lack of knowledge on how to ask for help and how to take care of your mental health properly and it didn’t sit right with me as a student.
For my course final project, we are asked to create a change within our community, and I found that it was the perfect time to collaborate with the Wellbeing team and improve the visibility of the services as much as possible - bridging the gap between students and Wellbeing staff. When I first moved to Falmouth I found it incredibly difficult to adjust, however due to my diagnosis of a long-term health condition I was allocated DSA (Disabled Students Allowance) support which led me to meeting weekly with a Support Worker and this really helped me grow not only as a student but as a person.
However, a lot of students are not eligible for this but need someone to speak to, so I wanted to use my skills of marketing and utilising Primary and Secondary research as much as possible to show students what is available to them.
We have managed to get some great feedback off students, and this has led us to make an infographic for student reps, posters for students, and Instagram posts that could be used by courses and more.
This project does not finish at the end of the academic year, a report for the Wellbeing team from September onwards will be constructed using survey data and this will help prompt the staff through the year from the answers that you have given them.
I’m very grateful for this journey and this project has been a great way of putting my management/marketing skills to the test. The Wellbeing team have been an amazing help, and the Cornwall Business School staff are extremely supportive of everyone’s ambitions to create a better community.
I hope that Bridge to Wellbeing helps students understand that you can ask for help and all the support you need is just an email away.
