  • Special course and living costs, excluding tuition fees, that are not covered by other funding sources.
  • Emergency payments for unexpected one-off costs, such as a flight home or urgent repairs.
  • Extra financial support if you are considering leaving university due to financial difficulties.
  • Essential IT access to meet the requirements of your course.
  • Contributions towards diagnostic assessments or specialist equipment.
  • Additional support for Care Leavers, including help with accommodation costs and bridging support after graduation.
  • Costs related to graduation attendance.

How is Funding Awarded?

The amount of funding you receive is based on your demonstrated financial need. This is calculated using the information you provide in your application, with your individual circumstances taken into account. Funding is usually awarded as a non-repayable grant, but there is also an option to apply for a loan instead.

Key Points to Remember

When applying for the Falmouth Hardship Fund, keep these important criteria in mind:

  1. Unexpected Financial Issues
    • The fund is intended for unforeseen financial difficulties that you could not have planned for before starting your course.
  2. Current Financial Hardship
    • You must be experiencing financial hardship right now—applications based on future concerns may not be eligible.
  3. Use of Other Financial Support
    • You should have already explored all other available financial resources, such as:
      • Maintenance loans
      • Student 0% overdrafts (many banks offer valuable incentives for student accounts)
  4. Provide Financial Information and a Supporting Statement
    • You will need to submit bank statements and explain any large expenses shown in your account.
    • You will need to submit a statement explaining your current circumstances in detail, supported by evidence.
  5. Employment Status
    • If you do not have a job, 1st and 2nd-year students will need to provide a valid reason why.
  6. Lifetime ISAs
    • If you have funds ‘locked’ in a Lifetime ISA, the Hardship Fund Team will assess your situation individually. Email them with details of the ISA withdrawal conditions, and they will determine your eligibility.

For more details, visit the Falmouth Hardship Fund webpage or contact advice@thesu.org.uk for guidance.

Planning for the Future

We encourage students to set aside money each month from the start of term to help with costs such as housing deposits. However, if you planned to do this but were unable to due to unforeseen circumstances, you may still be eligible for the Hardship Fund.
