SU Guide to Postgraduate Funding

Eligibility

Most UK postgraduate students can apply for a postgraduate loan, subject to satisfying the eligibility criteria. Each part of the UK has its own student funding agency:

  • England
  • Northern Ireland
  • Scotland
  • Wales

Each home nation offers its own postgraduate loan scheme, which generally includes:

  • Masters Loan
  • Doctoral Loan

While there are loans for master's students in each part of the UK, PhD loans are only available in England and Wales.

These loans help with tuition fees and basic living and study costs, such as rent, food, travel, and books. Unlike undergraduate loans, the money is handed over to you directly. This means you need to manage your loan to cover both tuition fees and living expenses. Good money management is crucial, as the loan may not cover all your costs.

Types of Loans

Masters Loan

  • Intended to help with both tuition fees and living costs.
  • Paid directly to the student.

Doctoral Loan

  • Similar to the Masters Loan but for doctoral studies.
  • Available only in England and Wales.
  • Paid directly to the student.

Research Grants (Studentships)

  • Research Councils are the main public investors in research in the UK.
  • They provide funding in several different subject areas.
  • Some students may be eligible to apply for a studentship.

How to Fund Your Postgrad Degree

Managing your finances as a postgraduate student can be challenging, but there are several options to help fund your studies:

  1. Postgraduate Loans: Available through your home nation’s funding agency.
  2. Scholarships and Bursaries: Look for additional funding opportunities offered by universities, charities, and private organisations.
  3. Charities Foundations and Trusts
  4. Employee Sponsorship
  5. Part-time Work: Consider a part-time job to supplement your income.
  6. Savings: If possible, use savings to help cover costs.
  7. Family Support: Some students may receive financial help from family.
  8. Crowdfunding!
