Commercial Awareness Society

The University of Exeter Commercial Awareness Society (ECAS) is a student-led society within the University of Exeter law school. We seek to vigorously enhance student commercial awareness skills to prepare them for the legal and industrial work field.

Commercial awareness is a vital skill not just for lawyers, but for a variety of other sectors, such as business and politics. ECAS was established to support students' commercial understanding, especially when the need to be commercially aware has become the top decider in training contract applications.

The Society aims to offer students a wide range of resources to help them gain an awareness of current affairs and changes in the commercial world. They can also explore the consequences of positive and negative commercial news and even how to write about it in applications.

How does ECAS work?
We host regular weekly meetings, held at the University of Exeter Penryn campus, during which our discussions are focussed on current and relevant commercial issues at the time of the meeting. We also organise workshops and events with the input of guest speakers who have industry insights or professional experience in the legal sector.

How can students get involved?
Students can join our society by purchasing a yearly membership from the SU website which will give access to all our events, weekly meetings, and the monthly newsletter. Furthermore, becoming a committee member allows students to develop their own commercial awareness skills and shape the society’s activities.

What opportunities do we offer our members?
We offer our members the opportunity to engage in discussion by attending our meetings and the chance to liaise and network with partners and trainees from a variety of firms during our larger events.
